E and I went to church last night. While Ash Wednesday isn’t a holy day of obligation, it’s still nice to go to get off to a good start for Lent. Plus, it’s not like we were going out for a steak dinner, so might as well go kill an hour at church. (Is that bad?)
So we are sitting there before mass, and I said, Did you ask Andy if he and Heather were coming tonight? (E works with Andy, and he and his wife go to the same church as us). There was a looong pause while E looked a me with an odd expression. Finally, I said a little louder, Did you ask Andy and Heather if they were coming tonight? He said, Oh! No. He said, I thought you said, She has candy hanging out of her coat. That cracked us both up. It’s hard to laugh quietly. I wish I had a picture of his expression. The other funny part is that it’s usually me who misunderstands what was said.
There were two other people in our pew. They were together – a man and an older woman, and I think it was a mother/son pair. As we’re coming back from receiving ashes, I was behind the woman, but the man must have gotten behind me. I was going to step aside to let him go into the pew first, but he didn’t give me the chance as he rushed past me to get in line behind his mom. First time I’ve ever been cut off in church. Maybe I should have reminded him that this was Wednesday and not NASCAR Sunday.
Finally, after Communion (does that need to be capitalized?), we were waiting for the last few people to receive it. A mother and her young daughter came up the aisle. The little girl was obviously mad and said dramatically, It’s not fair! (as only a young girl can say it) Then she said it again with a foot-stomp, It’s not fair! I was laughing to myself with two thoughts: 1. The fair’s in August (as those from a small-ish Midwest city would know), and 2. Life’s not fair (words from a mother sick of hearing her kids complain).
To try a new recipe, and have it turn out totally great.
To give up cheese and baked goods for Lent.
To be ready for spring/summer just because you’re tired of working out in the gym.
To play hooky for a few hours to go shopping and end up with two pairs of shoes, a bag, a wallet and some clothes.
To feel like an ass for forgetting to pick your mom up to take her to work.
I don’t care so much about blogging anymore. Or maybe, I don’t care so much about blogging lately.
My mom thinking she could walk around Saturday after foot surgery on Friday. It didn’t take long for her foot start hurting big time. Yeah, I think that’s why the doctor said to stay off your feet for 5 days.
The new girl at Starbucks shouting out my drink order even though I am the only customer in there and I’m standing at the pick up counter. Just give it to me!
Snow.
Cigarette smoke.
Sinus problems.
My dirty car.
Weather reports that are never accurate.
Micromanagers.
Bad economy and scary stimulus plan.
Monday.
I knit like I golf or drive a stick-shift – I know the basics and I can do it, I just don’t do it too well. Yet.
I did complete a dishcloth project though. It’s a little wonky, but it will work.
